A player leaves injured and another runs onto the field. Can the newcomer bowl? The answer depends on the kind of authorised change, not on the fact that a different shirt is now visible. Temporary fielding cover and a fully participating replacement are different statuses.
Before updating a player’s role, find the official description: substitute fielder, approved concussion replacement, or a tactical change under a named competition rule. If the announcement only says “a change,” leave batting and bowling permissions unconfirmed until the authorised category is named.
An ordinary substitute covers fielding
Under MCC Law 24, the umpires can allow a substitute fielder for the specified injury, illness, or another wholly acceptable reason. An ordinary substitute cannot bowl or captain; wicket-keeping requires umpire consent. This is not a full-player replacement rule.
Imagine Player A leaving for treatment while Player B fields at point. A catch by B establishes participation as a fielder. It does not establish that B has joined the batting order or is eligible to deliver the next over. Read the announced status before carrying those assumptions forward.
The returning nominated player is also a separate issue. The applicable absence and penalty-time provisions may affect later participation. Do not use a stopwatch and a guessed departure time to declare immediate bowling eligibility.
A concussion replacement needs its own authority
An ICC report from July 2023 described Mohammad Rizwan replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed on a like-for-like concussion basis and being able to bat. It is a historical example of a fuller replacement, not evidence of today’s IPL procedure.
The ICC’s June 2025 changes announcement also described nomination changes for concussion replacements. It separately discussed a time-limited serious-injury trial in domestic first-class cricket. Those are distinct provisions; a trial in one format should not quietly become a universal injury-replacement rule.
An injury scene cannot tell a viewer whether a concussion has been diagnosed or whether a replacement has been approved. Leave medical assessment to the responsible staff and eligibility decisions to the officials. A head-impact replay cannot supply either the medical finding or the replacement approval.

Make the permissions visible
| Status seen or announced | What it establishes | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary substitute fielder. | Temporary fielding role under the law. | Keeper consent and the nominated player’s return. |
| Approved concussion replacement. | A named replacement category was authorised. | Competition conditions and any stated role limits. |
| Tactical Impact Player change. | A competition-specific tactical procedure. | The relevant IPL season’s eligibility and timing. |
| Player merely warming up. | Preparation on the sideline. | Whether any entry was actually approved. |
This table deliberately avoids giving a single yes-or-no bowling answer for all categories. That would hide the very distinction you need. Record the authorised category and the rule for that match before completing a permissions list.
Three announcements, three records
In one invented incident, commentary says “a substitute is on” while the official feed names fielding cover. Record only that role. In a second, the organiser confirms a concussion replacement; preserve the announcement and time. In a third, an Impact Player graphic appears. Open the tactical rule rather than relabelling it a medical replacement.
The same newcomer might look identical in all three television shots. Status comes from the authorised procedure. Seeing a usual opening batter at point tells you where the newcomer is fielding; it does not tell you whether that player may bat.
Follow the participant, not only the squad list
Our team-news verification guide distinguishes a confirmed name from an expectation. The Impact Player guide follows tactical timing. This page asks what type of player change was approved.
For a player-statistic market, the match permission and the operator’s participation definition remain separate questions. Do not assume that taking a catch, being listed as an option, or receiving a replacement announcement automatically settles a ticket. If either the category or the market wording is missing, stop at a viewing observation.

MCC’s 2026 Laws took effect on October 1; that date alone does not establish IPL adoption. For a specific fixture, check its season’s playing conditions.
