A bonus balance of 20 is not necessarily 20 of withdrawable cash. It might be a token that can be used once, funds with a play-through condition, or a reward earned only after a qualifying bet settles. The headline amount tells you very little until you know which of those products is being offered.
Check what you must deposit or stake, which bets count, and every deadline before accepting the offer. If the offer asks for more spending than you already intended, declining it avoids that extra commitment.
Check what the wagering multiplier applies to
Two invented offers both say “5× wagering,” but one applies to a 20 bonus and the other to a 50 deposit plus a 20 bonus. In the first, the stated turnover would be 20 × 5 = 100. In the second, it would be (50 + 20) × 5 = 350. The multiplier is the same; the base changes the required total substantially.
| Hypothetical wording | Calculation | Stated turnover |
|---|---|---|
| 5× bonus only; bonus 20 | 5 × 20 | 100 |
| 5× deposit plus bonus; deposit 50, bonus 20 | 5 × 70 | 350 |
These examples explain language, not currently available offers or legal terms for every jurisdiction. Turnover means the sum of qualifying stakes under the stated rule. It is not the amount you will necessarily lose, and it is not a promise that the starting balance will last long enough to complete the requirement.
Local rules can change what an offer may require
For gambling operators covered by Great Britain’s Gambling Commission rules, the regulator’s promotion changes took effect on 19 January 2026 and cap bonus wagering requirements at ten times. That is a jurisdiction-specific rule. It should not be presented as a worldwide protection or proof that an unfamiliar website follows those standards.
Identify the contracting operator and applicable licence before relying on a consumer rule. A brand name in a banner does not by itself establish the legal entity or the terms attached to your account. Keep the actual offer text, including its date and any linked conditions.
A free-bet token is a different calculation
A published Betfair free-bet example states that the free-bet stake is not included in the winnings. That mechanism differs from an ordinary cash stake. This reference is for understanding the calculation only, not a recommendation or a claim of local availability.
Suppose an invented 10 token is used at decimal odds of 3.00 and wins. Under a stake-not-returned rule, the credit is 10 × (3.00 − 1) = 20. An ordinary 10 cash stake winning at the same odds would return 30, including its original stake. Calling both a “30 payout” hides the difference.
If a cash qualifying bet is required to earn the token, record that transaction separately. Losing 15 on the qualifying bet and later receiving 20 from the token leaves a combined gain of 5, not 20. If the token loses too, the qualifying loss remains. The token does not reverse the earlier result.

Minimum odds are only one eligibility condition
An offer may name a minimum decimal price, a specified sport, a bet type, or a settlement deadline. Read the complete combination. A bet that reaches the odds threshold may still fail another condition. Do not change to an unfamiliar market merely to satisfy a promotional rule.
Ask what counts toward any turnover total. For an invented contribution rule, a stake of 10 counted at 50% adds only 5 to the qualifying total. This is a calculation example, not a claim about sports bets on a named service. If no contribution percentage is specified clearly, ask before assuming full credit.
Maximum stake conditions and maximum promotional winnings are separate fields. One limits what can be staked under the offer; the other limits a possible credit. Neither should be confused with a normal withdrawal limit or a limit you set yourself for spending.
Put every deadline on the same timeline
Betfair’s free-bet information directs customers to the individual promotion for expiry details. Check the expiry on your offer; do not assume every token lasts a week.
Write down the opt-in deadline, qualifying-bet deadline, settlement deadline if one is stated, and reward expiry. Include the time zone. A requirement to place a bet by midnight is different from a requirement for it to settle by midnight. An event that starts before the cutoff may finish after it.
If the timing is too tight, let the promotion go. A countdown does not justify additional spending, and a balance disappearing at expiry is not a debt you need to recover through another bet.
Separate your money from conditional funds
Before accepting, locate the rules for withdrawing deposited cash, withdrawing any bonus-derived winnings, and cancelling the promotion. Ask whether cancellation removes only the unused reward or changes other balances. Do not guess from a single combined balance on the home screen.
A concise support question is: “Please identify which part of this balance is withdrawable now, which conditions apply to the remainder, and what would happen if I decline or cancel the bonus.” Keep the answer alongside the offer terms. If those distinctions remain unclear, the headline reward is not enough information to make an informed choice.
Questions readers ask
Does 5× wagering always mean five times the bonus?
No. Read the stated base. A hypothetical 20 bonus at five times requires 100 of qualifying turnover; a stated deposit-plus-bonus base of 70 would produce 350. Applicable local rules and actual terms still need checking.
Why did a 10 free bet at 3.00 return only 20?
Under a stake-not-returned rule, the calculation is 10 × (3.00 − 1). The token itself is not credited back. This is different from a winning cash stake at the same odds.
Is placing a qualifying bet before expiry enough?
Only if that is what the terms require. Some wording may require settlement by a deadline. Identify each deadline and time zone; a match starting before the cutoff can finish after it.
